Appropriation vs. Stealing & Fairy vs. Moser

Surprise!

NOTE: A work-in-progress… beta is yucky I know, but better than nothing for now…
There’s a good discussion going on at flickr (a place I should frequent more often), regarding “obey” and other’s use of images in the public domain (in this case, art that is really old). It’s a pretty good overview of the arguement, and I found myself nodding my head at many different points from bothsides. I believe Shanrosen says it best though:

If you are arguing that copying is unethical, have a deeper look at art history. Historically, artists always learned by copying the masters. Lots of copies of the works of the Old Masters exist, and many works only survive as copies. This is widespread in all the arts. Shakespeare, for example, used many earlier works when developing his plays. Think of the folk process, where works are changed and developed over generations, sometimes retaining much of their original character, and sometimes being substantially reworked but still clearly identifiable. Check out Bob Dylan’s works and his creative process. It is much the same as what we are talking about here (though Dylan is IMHO by far the superior artist).

We need to be clear-headed about copying and copyright. If we’re not, then we could acquiesce to a copyright regime which would be stifling for everyone except the media conglomerates. It is already affecting people here in Flickr who use old found images in their montages. Their pages have been removed from public view in case of (highly unlikely) copyright violation. The risk is seen as too high for Flickr to take.

But what effect is that going to have on the art of montage? We have perfect tools for it now (Photoshop, GIMP) but will we be unable to exhibit montage on the web for fear of copyright violation? (Fairey’s work is a digital montage of public domain works, a bit more subtle than the usual, but you people have identified the source images accurately.)

The Grooveblog discusses Roy Lichtenstein’s fine walk between appropriation and theivery.

took me long enough

this will be me someday soon

So damnit. Thanks a lot James. I’m hooked now. I don’t wanna do anything else.

All I want to do is work on this site.

So much for class…

…and projects

And that means the return of weather, and a working “Now Playing!”

Yeah… I’ve been eyein that camera for way too long now… (since before Japan). I really wanna just get it now, but I know that once the update to it comes out, the price’ll keep droppin’ (or I might just go cutting edge). But man its hard. I look at that page everday, subconciously hoping that I’ll break and put in the order.

Why the lust?

Well, my old “trusty” Sony cam just ain’t cuttin it no more. Waaaaaay to much lag: with flash, it creates about a 7 second interval in which the camera is COMPLETELY unusable— no preview (screen turns off for some weird reason), no nuthin. And that’s when the flash is usable. 80% of the time, it just ends up making the pictures darker. Along with the lack of an audio-only mode (I use my cam as a ghetto tape recorder for concerts and conversation, when its too dark for movies), I’ve pretty much stopped taking pictures “in the moment”, now strictly using it for documentation. Now while I’m definately an advocate of picture sharing among friends (is it REALLY necessary to use 15 different cameras for the same group photo? c’mon, we’re in the internet age!), it sucks not being able to capture those moments which only your own imagination sees.
Damn… I’m such a technocrat! (at least I’m not this fiend)

Ah well, I layed low this weekend. Went to language table, and chilled with Takashi, Daniel, Baby (Andrew), Eric and Stephanie. Talked about a lotta interesting stuff, ghost stories, Equilibrium, Death Metal, Equilibrium, Geography (Baby draws crazy detailed country maps from memory), Progressive Metal, Yatta, religion, and bubble-like alien crafts. I think I infect people with randomness!

On Saturday, I went to APSA talent show to watch Zandi and Arash perform. They kicked ASS. I had never heard Zandi sing (live), and I must say I was blown away. She deserves her diva status fasho!
And Angry Black Man Props to Arash on his drummin’. You could really see that he felt the music… aww my hero.

I was supposed to watch… haha… Equilibrium with the crew after the show, but I had to return that damned half full keg from the party. Stupid broken tap ruined EVERYTHING (not the party tho! shit was hot! thanks to all those who came out!). Karen also invited me out to a black & white party @ Lorelai’s old pad, but I decided to just stay home and do work nothing really (she actually ended up not goin at all).
Well, there’s my stream of conciousness. I should keep this up and get all the shit still in my head out, so I can move on to more productive posts eh?

This week’s Pix:
